The solution to automatically identify signs of breast cancer by Nguyen Hong Dang, Viettel engineer, won the first prize in the international competition on AI application.
Nguyen Hong Dang, an expert of Viettel Cyberspace Center (Viettel Cyberspace), surpassed 2,200 artificial intelligence (AI) experts worldwide in the contest "Detecting breast cancer through mammography screening".
The competition is organized and launched by the Radiological Society of North America (RNSA) in the world's largest community of AI and data science professionals on the Kaggle platform.
The AI solution developed by Viettel can automatically recognize signs of breast cancer from a very small area in a mammogram. This solution can be integrated into computer-aided diagnosis (CADx systems) to improve accuracy in diagnosis and treatment.

According to the jury's assessment, the solution from Viettel has solved the data imbalance in AI model training. In the data file provided by the contest, the proportion of labeled malignant cancer samples accounted for only about 2% of the total number of samples, while the remaining number of samples labeled as benign or normal accounted for 98%. This data imbalance can cause artificial intelligence to make false predictions.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Quy, Director of Viettel Cyberspace shared: "We are perfecting the solution into a service based on Viettel AI Platform. Hospitals, medical organizations and individuals can fully access and use it. This solution will optimize time and cost compared to researching AI models by yourself."

To become the winner of the contest, Dang said he received great support from Viettel Cyberspace when he inherited the Center's AI research knowledge and used "supercomputer infrastructure", which was in the top 500. The world's most powerful computer, with a computing performance of 20 Petaflops (20 million billion operations per second) to find solutions and optimize algorithms.
Kaggle, a subsidiary of Google LLC, is one of the largest communities of AI and data science professionals in the world. Not only a place to share knowledge, Kaggle is also a platform to connect businesses, organizations and scientists to find and develop AI application solutions to solve real-life problems. . Founded in 2010, Kaggle now attracts millions of members from around the world.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cancer globally. Breast cancer screening has been shown to reduce cancer mortality by up to 40%, where artificial intelligence tools have the potential to make the screening process more valuable and effective.
